This workshop includes 4 hours of online learning and a follow-up 90-minute on demand workshop that can be watched anytime within a 24-hour period.

 

In this workshop, Sheena and Louise will review the modelled, shared, guided
and independent reading approaches.

 

Online workshop content
Session 1: Guiding principles and practices

  • The big ideas about an effective reading programme
  • The development of reading skills and strategies
  • Unpacking the reading process (decoding, comprehension and thinking critically)
  • The teaching approaches in an effective reading programme

Session 2: Reading to students

  • Why reading to students is important
  • Resources to support teachers

Session 3: Shared reading

  • Using the shared reading approach across all levels of the school to explicit teach the reading process (decoding, comprehension and thinking critically)

Session 4: Independent reading activities

  • Reviewing independent activities that are engaging for students and manageable for teachers
  • Sharing different organisations for independent activities
  • Reviewing independent reading activities for older students

Session 5: Independent reading

  • Reviewing the importance of independent reading, including ideas to motivate and engage students in the reading process

 
On demand workshop: Guided reading

  • Revisiting the components of a guided reading session
  • Sharing practical ideas for planning and organising guided reading lessons (Junior and Senior workshops available)
