Conversation prompts are a great way to reduce teacher-talk in the classroom. Janie Patroni from St Leonard’s Road School in Auckland has conversation starter stems attached to the side of her whiteboard easel. Janie directs students to a particular prompt during discussions by saying 'Pink bubble' or 'Purple bubble'.

Refer to PM14 of The Oral Language Book for examples of conversation prompts.
