Louise will unpack the key features of explicit teaching and share strategies to actively engage all learners. The workshop will focus on guided practice during whole-class teaching to ensure all students are learning and the teacher can provide immediate, targeted feedback. A range of engaging texts will be explored, giving students access to rich and diverse material that connects to the wider curriculum and fosters a love of reading.

Louise will present a manageable and effective weekly structure to explicitly teach and guide students to:

  • Activate prior knowledge
  • Learn new vocabulary
  • Practise decoding and self-monitoring
  • Develop reading fluency
  • Comprehend texts
  • Participate in quality discussions about texts


Teachers will receive:

  • Sample planning templates
  • Resources for whole-class teaching and independent activities


This workshop aligns with the New Zealand and Australian curricula and the principles of the Science of Learning.
