Join Louise as she unpacks the key features of explicit reading instruction, drawing on the principles of the New Zealand and Australian curricula. The workshop will highlight the role of guided practice within whole-class instruction to support students to practise new skills, with immediate teacher feedback.

A range of rich and engaging texts will be explored, giving students access to diverse content that connects across the curriculum and fosters a love of reading.

Louise will share a clear, manageable weekly structure to explicitly teach and guide students to:

  • activate prior knowledge
  • learn and use new vocabulary
  • practise decoding and self-monitoring
  • develop reading fluency
  • retell and summarise texts
  • comprehend increasingly complex texts
  • engage in purposeful discussions about texts

Participants will receive:

  • sample weekly plans
  • whole-class and independent teaching resources

What teachers said about this workshop:

"I loved the practical examples, videos and interactions with the students that we can take forward in our practices."

"Evidence-based and practical. I took so much away from this, and it made me reflect on my teaching practices. I will be implementing many of the ideas covered. Loved the science behind it and the practical applications."

"I really loved the content and felt it was delivered in a very clear way, and I have already started implementing it in the classroom. Thank you so much for sharing the slides and resources, too. Would definitely recommend!"
