Supporting students to edit and revise their writing

Editing writing is challenging and a task that even experienced writers’ often dread.

There are two different components to editing that need to be explicitly taught.

Editing or proofreading — this is the process of regularly checking writing for accuracy (spelling, punctuation, grammar and meaning)
Recrafting or revising — improving the content of the writing in relation to the success criteria

In this workshop we will cover:

The skills for editing that need to be broken down into manageable steps and taught to students
How we can support students to transfer these skills using ‘guided practice’
How editing can be embedded in the writing lesson, so students have multiple opportunities to learn and practise editing.
