Teaching reading comprehension strategies

Comprehension is one of the most challenging issues facing teachers of reading today. Although many students are accurate and fluent decoders, this does not always translate into having a good understanding of the text. How can we support students to help themselves when meaning breaks down? This workshop takes current reading research and translates it into classroom practice.

This workshop will include:

  • a brief overview of recent reading comprehension research and how it can be synthesised into realistic model of classroom practice.
  • clarification of useful strategies
  • a researched model for how to introduce and teach the strategies
  • student activities that support and improve comprehension.
