We recommend setting an oral language goal and identifying a lesson when you will practise the goal

Shared reading is a fantastic time to focus on oral language, as there is plenty to talk about and time for discussion.

Share the goal with the students and break down the success criteria. Then model the goal and support students to practise it. You will notice that they achieve the goal very quickly, and you can move on to another one. Focusing on the goal during one lesson a day makes it manageable.

You can use the poster to identify goals, but can also be displayed in the classroom so students know where they are up to on their journey toward becoming ‘discussion experts’.
